What the Abbreviations Mean in the Context of UFOs

This is a quick reference explaining some of the abbreviations and terms used in the context of UFOs.

Alien Life: Extraterrestrial life, life which does not originate from Earth or a species not native to the environment it is living in.

APRO: Aerial Phenomena Research Organization.

Asteroids: are minor planets, especially those of the inner Solar System.

Comet is an icy small Solar System body that, when passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release gases, a process called outgassing.

Extraterrestrial refers to any object or being beyond (extra-) the planet Earth (terrestrial). It is derived from the Latin words extra (“outside”, “outwards”) and terrestris (“earthly”, “of or relating to the Earth”).

Flying Saucer: Alien Spacecraft. Not always saucer shaped. A term often used in a derogatory way by skeptics.

Ion: is an atom, or a molecule, in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom or molecule a net positive or negative electrical charge.

Meteor: A meteor, known colloquially as a “shooting star” or “falling star”, is the visible passage of a glowing meteoroid, micrometeoroid, comet or asteroid through Earth’s atmosphere, after being heated to incandescence by collisions with air molecules in the upper atmosphere, creating a streak of light via its rapid motion and sometimes also by shedding glowing material in its wake. Meteors typically occur in the mesosphere at altitudes from 76 to 100 km (47 to 62 mi) –wiki

Mmeteorite is a solid piece of debris from an object, such as a comet, asteroid, or meteoroid, that originates in outer space and survives its passage through the Earth’s atmosphere and impact with the Earth’s surface or that of another planet.

Meteoroid: is a small rocky or metallic body in outer space. Meteoroids are significantly smaller than asteroids, and range in size from small grains to 1 meter-wide objects.

Minor Planet: A minor planet is an astronomical object in direct orbit around the Sun that is neither a planet nor exclusively classified as a comet. Minor planets can be dwarf planets, asteroids, trojans, centaurs, Kuiper belt objects, and other trans-Neptunian objects.

MUFON: Mutual UFO Network. is an American-based non-profit organization that investigates cases of alleged UFO sightings. It is one of the oldest and largest civilian UFO-investigative organizations in the United States. MUFON claims 3,000 members worldwide with chapters in every US state.

Outer Space: Outer space or just space, is the void that exists between celestial bodies, including Earth. It is not completely empty, but consists of a hard vacuum containing a low density of particles, predominantly a plasma of hydrogen and helium as well as electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, neutrinos, dust, and cosmic rays.

OVNI: Objet Volant Non Identifié (French: Unidentified Flying Object)

Planet is an astronomical body orbiting a star or stellar remnant that is massive enough to be rounded by its own gravity, is not massive enough to cause thermonuclear fusion, and has cleared its neighbouring region of planetesimals.

Planetesimals: are solid objects thought to exist in protoplanetary disks and in debris disks.

Plasma: is one of the four fundamental states of matter, while the others are solid, liquid, and gas. Unlike these three states of matter, plasma does not naturally exist on the Earth under normal surface conditions, and can only be artificially generated from neutral gases.

Project Blue Book: was one of a series of systematic studies of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) conducted by the United States Air Force. It started in 1952, and it was the third study of its kind (the first two were projects Sign (1947) and Grudge (1949).

Protoplanetary disk: A rotating circumstellar disk of dense gas and dust surrounding a young newly formed star.

Space Deris: Space debris, junk, waste, trash, or litter is the collection of defunct man-made objects in space – old satellites, spent rocket stages, and fragments from disintegration, erosion, and collisions – including those caused by debris itself. As of December 2016 there were 5 satellite collisions with space waste. –wiki

St. Elmo’s fire: is a weather phenomenon in which luminous plasma is created by a coronal discharge from a sharp or pointed object in a strong electric field in the atmosphere (such as those generated by thunderstorms or created by a volcanic eruption).

UFO: Unidentified Flying Objects

USO: Unidentified Submersible Object

USSTRATCOM: United States Strategic Command, s responsible for strategic deterrence, global strike, and operating the Defense Department’s Global Information Grid.

USAF: United States Air Force
